(COLEEN JOSE\/The Bronx Ink)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Bronx opened evacuation centers Sunday night, as Hurricane Sandy continued its path toward New York City.<\/p>\n<p>About two thirds of the 4-square-mile peninsula is categorized as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gis.nyc.gov\/oem\/he\/map.htm?lon=-73.88648142954905&amp;lat=40.82181526227949\" target=\"_blank\">Zone B<\/a>\u00a0by the New York City Office of Emergency Management, meaning that residents can expect a moderate possibility of evacuation.<\/p>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gis.nyc.gov\/oem\/he\/map.htm?lon=-73.94608650923423&amp;lat=40.83011464135873\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0to find out where the nearest evacuation center is near you.<\/p>\n<p>In Hunts Point, wind gusts, cloudy skies and light rain covered an area where\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huntspoint.com\">one of the world&#8217;s largest food-distribution centers<\/a>\u00a0operates in a low-lying location facing the East River. \u00a0Hunt Point&#8217;s produce, meat and seafood market supplies much of the city and surrounding region&#8217;s grocery markets and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\">National Hurricane Center<\/a>\u00a0estimates that the storm system will touch down in New York on Monday evening.\u00a0The city opened <a href=\"http:\/\/gis.nyc.gov\/oem\/he\/map.htm?lon=-73.94608650923423&amp;lat=40.83011464135873\">72\u00a0evacuation centers<\/a>\u00a0in public schools to accommodate more than 370,000 residents living in flood-prone communities.<\/p>\n<p>City officials suspended service of the entire city&#8217;s transit system and issued mandatory evacuations on Sunday as Hurricane Sandy neared landfall.
