Mother of murdered 15-year old ‘Junior’ moved by city’s street dedication

When Leandra Feliz first learned that Bathgate Avenue and E. 183rd Street in the Bronx would be renamed after her murdered son, she described it as God’s doing. Her son was killed in a case of mistaken identity. The hashtag #justiceforjunior spread online. “People will forget it was Bathgate,” Feliz said. “It’’ll be Lesandro Junior.”

Cancer diagnosis threatens future of Bronx bird sanctuary

Troy Lancaster built the Bronx’s Dred Scott Bird Sanctuary from the ground up 22 years ago and works almost daily on the park’s upkeep. After being diagnosed with cancer last year, however, he’s been trying to find a replacement—to no avail.

Protesters Denounce Majora Carter’s Wealth Protection Plan for Hunts Point Homeowners

Protesters gathered outside a meeting that Majora Carter hosted with non-profit lenders and homeowners. Protesters accused Carter of displacing Hunts Point residents, promoting her long-held mission she calls “self-gentrification.”

Paper Streets: The Unbuilt Streets of the Bronx

Scattered throughout the Bronx are streets that were never built, located on paper only, they exist in no man’s land and under no department’s jurisdiction. Where the streets should be are instead garbage-strewn weed patches, impromptu parking lots, or, in two cases, parts of Trump’s Throgs Neck golf course.

Mapes Field Unlocked to Host a Game of Cops v. East Tremont Kids

It’s not easy to find out why East Tremont’s Mapes Field was locked in the first place. Still, officers from the 48th Precinct are now opening it up long enough to host baseball competitions with the neighborhood kids, harkening back to the days when the field was the center of the community.
