Teen Arrested for Shooting of 5-Year-Old

Police arrested 18-year-old Angel Morales yesterday in connection with the shooting of a young girl. NY1 reports that Morales is charged with attempted murder and weapons possession.

The 5-year-old girl was taken to the hospital for a wound in her torso and is in stable condition.

Shot 5-Year-Old Girl in Stable Condition

Police say that a 5-year-old girl was shot early this morning in Tremont, in the courtyard of the Hughes Avenue building. DNA Info reports that an investigation is ongoing and it’s unclear why the girl was fired upon. The girl was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she is in stable condition and recovering.

Riverdale Public Library Exhibit Explores Art on Post-it Notes

Bronx artist Nina Seigenfeld-Velazquez, 51, exhibits a collection of drawings on Post-it Notes and other everyday objects at the Riverdale Public Library. The Riverdale Press reports that Seigenfeld-Velazquez has created over 400 works on sticky notes.

The exhibition, “What’s Mine Is Yours,” is now on display through January 26th.

Bronx Highschoolers Go Whole Semester Without Math or English

Students at the Bronx High School for Medical Science will have to forgo math and English classes for a semester due to a lack of teachers. DNA Info reports that general ed students have been told they will be able to make up the credits later and still graduate in four years. However, many students at the school are concerned that having gaps in subjects will make it difficult for them to score well on the SAT and other college entrance exams.

Van Cortlandt Park Ice Rink Opens Today

The Van Cortlandt Park ice skating rink opened to the public today, making it the first rink in the Bronx in 30 years. Bronx Park Commissioner Hector Aponte and other officials attended the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Missing Children Found Safe, Father Surrenders to Police

The Bronx man who allegedly kidnapped his two young children in a hijacked car gave himself up to the police today. DNA Info reports that Fitz Edwards is charged with shooting at the estranged mother of his children and setting fire to her apartment before fleeing with the children. The incident triggered an AMBER alert.

The children were found safe yesterday afternoon in the stolen vehicle.

Bronx Veterans’ Day Parade to Honor Women

The 28th annual Bronx Veterans’ Day Parade to be held in Throgs Neck this Sunday will pay special tribute to the women of the armed forces. The Daily News reports that the community is excited about the event and its special focus.
