Community Leaders Support “Operation Crew Cut,” Want More Youth Programs

Bronx community leaders are supportive of a new New York Police Department initiative called “Operation Crew Cut” that is meant to combat small gangs that have been involved in gun violence.

The police department will increase the size of its gang division from 150 to 300 detectives who will track social media, where rivalries often start, the New York Daily News reports.

Additionally, police department lawyers will work with borough prosecutors and some precincts will have as many as a dozen officers to deal with turf wars.

According to the report, there are more than 300 crews in New York City and roughly 60 in the Bronx. Neighborhood leaders also believe more extracurricular activities are necessary to help solve gang issues.
