Karen Washington has been a driving force in community gardens in the East Tremont Area for over 20 years. Starting with the plot visible from her kitchen window on Prospect Avenue, she created a coalition of gardens throughout the Bronx in an effort to provide affordable healthy food to the community. Through involvement with the community, her ability to communicate effectively with officials and a desire for change in her neighborhood, Karen Washington has been able go beyond food and directly affect the world around her.

It´s hard to imagine that too many South Bronx neighborhoods are staging cultural events that look and sound like BlakTino, a series of performances that interweave the cultures of African-Americans, Latinos and gay New Yorkers.
