Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper

Over 150 Catholic Bronxites attended the mass of the Lord’s last supper on Thursday at Holy Cross Church in Clason Point. Rev. Peter Pomposello reenacted the washing of the feet–a ritual that replicates Christ’s action of cleansing the feet of his 12 disciples before his last passover meal. See our slide show.

St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in the Bedford Park neighborhood mainly serves an Indian community of worshippers. It was established in 1972. As time passed, members of the congregation gradually moved to New Jersey, upstate New York, or Pennsylvania. But distance did not cut their ties to the church. [SLIDESHOW] Bronxites declare: ¡Somos Dominicanos!

Bronxites gathered Tuesday evening for a night of singing, dancing and celebrating Dominican Heritage Month. More than 600,000 people of Dominican descent live in New York, and the Bronx’s population is about 17 percent Dominican, according to 2009 Census estimates. These numbers are expected to increase in the 2010 Census. With an increasing Dominican presence in the borough, we asked Bronxites why they are proud to be Dominican and the importance of celebrating Dominican Heritage Month.
