The Mott Haven Academy is growing lettuce, herbs and chives in its newly open rooftop garden. The Mott Haven Herald reports that the charter school uses the garden in its curriculum to teach children about nutrition and science. Funding for the project came from Bolthouse Farms and private donors.

Bronx parks that suffered damage during Superstorm Sandy and the nor’easter are facing a several month-long clean up efforts, DNAinfo reports. The eco-friendly Riverside Campus in Hunts Point is home to a new glow-in-the-dark sculpture that’s designed to boost the park’s ecosystem. The Hunts Point Express reports that the new installation will attract beneficial insects and foster plant growth. Police have charged a University Heights man with the murder of his 5-year-old son and the attempted murder of his 7-year-old daughter. DNA Info reports that Leonardo Espinal allegedly drowned the boy and poisoned the girl. She in now in stable condition after being taken to Montefiore Medical Center.

University Heights police are investigating the death of a 5-year-old boy whose body was found after a 119 call reporting an emotionally disturbed person. DNA Info reports that Stewart Espinal was pronounced dead after being taken to Saint Barnabus Hospital. Police have taken a 47-year-old man into custody as a suspect.
